From Classroom to Field: Will Astley's Evolution in Agricultural Innovation
Will Astley's journey to becoming Grazing Product Manager at Cogent Breeding illustrates how teaching experience and industry passion can forge an innovative path in agricultural genetics. Over his six-year tenure, Will has transformed his educational background into a dynamic career focused on advancing grazing programmes and supporting the next generation of farming.
After completing his Foundation Degree in Agriculture with Dairy Herd Management at Reaseheath College—where he placed second in the Dairy Student of the Year Award—Will's career path took him through roles as an AI technician and dairy nutritionist before leading him to teaching. "Teaching at Reaseheath for two-and-a-half years really fuels my passion today to help farmers drive their profitability and make the industry a sustainable place for the next generation," Will reflects.
His transition to Cogent came from a proactive approach to career development. "I had always wanted to be involved in the genetics industry, and teaching genetics at Reaseheath had fuelled this further," he explains. "I decided to send my CV across to Cogent without knowing if there was a role available." This initiative led to an opportunity as the Friesian and Coloured Breed Specialist, marking the beginning of a diverse journey within the company.
Will's role has evolved significantly since joining Cogent. From his initial specialist position, he progressed to Grazing and Coloured Breed Product Manager, before stepping into sales leadership as an Area Sales Manager in December 2023. As Will moved back as Grazing Product Specialist, which encompasses both LIC and EBI product lines, supporting farmers in making strategic genetic decisions while managing innovative projects like the new TRACKER scoring tool for grazing farms.
"Experience of the dairy sector and having such a rounded view of the industry through teaching such a wide range of subjects has really helped me succeed in the role," Will shares. "For me, it is not just about genetics—genetics is the way we as Cogent help that farm business, but there is so much more to talk about, whether that is grass growth rates, health events, or fertility performance."
One of Will's proudest achievements has been the growth of Cogent's grazing portfolio. "We now have three exclusive distribution partners in LIC, Dovea and Eurogene and have seen unprecedented growth in this space—it is now a key part of Cogent's offering," he notes. This success stems from the autonomy he was given early in his role to develop strategies and acquire the best genetics.
Professional development has been central to Will's journey at Cogent, with opportunities in management training, sales training, and mental health awareness. "Cogent's willingness to support change and listen to people's career aspirations really helps you to develop," he explains. "They have always ensured I am in the right role to continue developing but equally support Cogent's growth."
Outside of work, Will maintains strong connections to the agricultural world, owning shares in racehorses and several special Ayrshire cows—one of which placed second at Dairy Day. He also enjoys spending time with his Springer Spaniel, Bryn, maintaining a healthy work-life balance that Cogent actively encourages.
For those considering a career at Cogent, Will's advice is clear: "Grab the opportunity. Cogent doesn't try and push people down a path and allows you to develop your role provided it also benefits the business. Take every opportunity you are offered and don't be afraid to move between roles if it helps you and Cogent grow."
Looking ahead, Will remains passionate about the future of grazing breeds programmes. "Cogent has a clear vision and plan for the future, and I can't wait to help drive the business forwards further over the coming months and years," he shares. "I want to enjoy my work every day and be excited by what will come each day—and Cogent offers me that."
Will's journey exemplifies how Cogent nurtures talent and supports professional growth while maintaining a strong focus on industry innovation and sustainability. His experience demonstrates that with passion, adaptability, and the right support, a career in agricultural genetics can evolve in exciting and unexpected ways.
