Meet Rob Jones: Precision and Reliability in Dairy Breeding

In the early hours of the morning, while most people are still asleep, Rob Jones is already on the road. As a PrecisionREPRO Technician for Cogent, he's responsible for the reproductive success of dairy herds across his region. Arriving on farms as the day begins ensures optimal timing for artificial insemination.

Rooted in Agriculture

For Rob, agriculture isn't just a career, it's a way of life. Growing up on a sheep farm instilled in him the values of hard work, reliability, and animal husbandry from an early age.

"I was fortunate enough to grow up in agriculture," Rob explains. "After completing an apprenticeship on a local dairy farm, I gained good knowledge of herd management that still serves me well today."

This practical foundation has proven invaluable in his current role, where understanding cow behaviour, fertility cycles, and the rhythms of dairy farm life are essential skills.

Finding his Calling in Precision Breeding

When Rob joined Cogent just over three years ago, he was drawn to the technical aspects of reproductive management and the opportunity to apply his practical framing knowledge in a specialised role.

"I thought AIing would be really interesting as I had already learnt the basics whilst doing my apprenticeship," he shares. “The early morning schedule works well for me, and I enjoy the focused nature of the work.”

What started as professional interest has developed into a rewarding career that allows Rob to play a crucial role in the success of numerous dairy herds. His consistent presence and reliability have made him an indispensable partner to the farmers he serves.

Building Trust and Expertise

In his three years with Cogent, Rob has become an integral part of his clients' farm teams. "I've increased my skills and knowledge and have a good relationship with the farmers I work with," he notes. "I'm trusted to take responsibility for the fertility within the herds."

That trust isn't given lightly in farming communities, it's earned through consistency, reliability and results. "I think my main accomplishment is being a trustworthy member of staff," Rob reflects. "The farmers can leave me to get on with my job!"

In an industry where reproductive efficiency directly affects farm profitability, this trust represents significant professional achievement.

Looking to the Future

As Rob continues to develop his expertise, he remains enthusiastic about his role at Cogent and the positive impact he has on the farms he services.

"At the moment I am just really happy with my job," he says. "I feel like I'm successful and enjoy it."

With the support of his manager Graham Higgott, who Rob describes as always being "in contact, appreciates my work and takes on board feedback," he continues to develop his skills as an AI technician and expand his knowledge of bovine reproduction and genetics.

For anyone considering a similar career path, Rob's advice is straightforward: "Go for it! Cogent is a good company to work for."

Through his dedication to precision, reliability and continuous learning, Rob Jones exemplifies the professional standards that Cogent's PrecisionREPRO service is built upon, helping farmers achieve their breeding goals through consistent, high-quality service delivery.
